One of the necessary procedures for lifeboats, rescue boats and davits is their annual inspection. Inspection contains the checking of technical condition of davit and winch with special attention paid to brake and gearbox elements, and if necessary repairs or renewal of parts. During lifeboat service the main part of inspection is release gear. The general condition of lifeboat is checked as well as engine with gearbox and loose equipment.
Every five years of operation also the 5-yearly inspection must be performed. It’s the extended form of annual inspection. Extended due to mandatory service jobs, mandatory spares renewal due to manufacturers recommendations and over load tests with at least 110% of Safe Working Load.
Inspection are done in accordance to SOLAS chapter 3, reg. 20 and IMO MSC.1/Circ. 1206 /Rev.1.
